Guernica / Gernika

Getting there was enjoyable

Due to our small group size, we took a smaller bus, and thus smaller roads from Bilbao to San Sebastian.

We stopped at a Txakoli winery for Tour & Taste.

Then continued on to Guernica, a city with rich and sad history.  The symbolic soul of the Basque People.     With a great Lunch break to finish our time.

Two Elements of importance

Guernica has been the heart of the Basque People since back to the Middle Ages.  This was the place of Assembly for the regions.  Still a symbol for Basque separatism.  Due to this long history, Guernica was a target of Franco during the Spanish Civil War, which led to the bombing by Hitler's Air Force in 1937.  They were trying horrific new techniques.

This led to the Picasso masterpiece for peace, the epic work 'Guernica'.  The original hangs in Madrid, but a full size tile replica is found here.
